I have installed VMWare image of GroundWork Monitor onto ESX server.
I changed the DHCP IP to a Static IP.
I edited /etc/hosts to show IP of gwrkvm. This file now reads...

X.X.X.X gwrkvm
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6

The /etc/resolv.conf was blank at the beginning. Now it reads..

nameserver.x.x.com X.X.X.X

I try nslookup. It doesn't resolve anything. The msg is 'connection timesd out; no servers could be reached'

The gwce-dns service is reporting 'DNS CRITICAL - '/usr/bin/nslookup -sil' msg parsing exited with no address'

I have gone through the forum for the last few days but found nothing to resolve this.
Any other ideas out there?

You *do* realize this is not the accepted format for /etc/resolv.conf, right?

Code:
# man 5 resolv.conf

I have resolv.conf done correctly and still no joy on getting this service to work correctly:

resolv.conf:
nameserver X.X.X.X
nameserver X.X.X.X
domain xxx.com

Any insight or others having this issue? The machine does lookups correctly both from the local hosts file and also from the nameserver(s) listed in the resolv.conf...but service still RED. Thanks.

I'm having the same problem here.
Groundwork running on ESX using DCHP but with reserved an IP for this host.

[root@gwrkvm ~]# cat /etc/hosts
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
192.168.1.6 gwrkvm
::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6
192.168.2.20 mailproxy

[root@gwrkvm ~]# cat /etc/resolv.conf
; generated by /sbin/dhclient-script
search xxx.xxx
nameserver 192.168.1.7
nameserver 192.168.1.21

NSlookup works fine from command line

[root@gwrkvm ~]# nslookup www.groundworkopensource.com
Server: 192.168.1.7
Address: 192.168.1.7#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: http://www.groundworkopensource.com
Address: 64.147.164.229

But I receive the following error message from within application
/usr/local/groundwork/nagios/libexec/check_dns -t 30 -s 4.2.2.2 -H "www.groundworkopensource.com"
DNS CRITICAL - '/usr/bin/nslookup -sil' msg parsing exited with no address

I also found interesting that my firewall is picking up an attempt to connect on domain-udp to the following ip 4.2.2.2 on what it looks like to be a dns server somewhere
C:\Program Files\Support Tools>nslookup
Default Server: *********
Address: 192.168.1.7
> server 4.2.2.2
Default Server: vnsc-bak.sys.gtei.net
Address: 4.2.2.2
> http://www.groundworkopensource.com
Server: vnsc-bak.sys.gtei.net
Address: 4.2.2.2

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: http://www.groundworkopensource.com
Address: 64.147.164.229

but Off course my fw is blocking that traffic.

I hope this helps to troubleshoot the problem.

here is your test
Code:
/usr/local/groundwork/nagios/libexec/check_dns -t 30 -s 4.2.2.2 -H "www.groundworkopensource.com"

Note the -s 4.2.2.2.
that is the server you are telling it to go to to attempt to resolve the groundwork name. If you want it to use an internal machine, replace 4.2.2.2 with the internal DNS server machines IP

Hi,

If you are using new Debian 5.0 nameserver config is changed.
/etc/resolv.conf new is blank.
Your DNS config is in /etc/network/interfaces:

In your NIC block add:
dns-nameservers <dns1> <dns2>
dns-search <yourdomain>

In others "new" distributions of linux is posible not work.

Sorry for my very bad english.
Diego.
